Eligibility
Scholarships for Women in Australia 2009
Fellowships are open to women scholars who:
• are graduates of a recognized tertiary institution from any country and are intending to take up or continue postgraduate studies at a recognized tertiary institution in Queensland, Australia, or
• have graduated at a recognized tertiary institution in Queensland, and are intending to take up or continue postgraduate studies at a recognized tertiary institution elsewhere.
Value
The annual value of the Fellowships is linked to the value of Australian Postgraduate Awards (APAs) plus 10%. As an indication, an APA in 2008 was worth $22,020 per year.
Number of Fellowships
FFI may vary the number of Fellowships awarded from year to year for any reason. As a guide only, the annual number of awards made in recent years has been in the order of 5 - 6 Fellowships. FFI reserves the right not to award Fellowships in any year.

Selection Criteria
FFI awards its Fellowships using a holistic review and selection process. Applications from all academic disciplines are welcome. FFI’s decisions are final and no correspondence will be entered into in respect of any aspect of the applications and awards process. Applicants who miss out in any given year are welcome to reapply in subsequent years; however, as a matter of policy, FFI does not offer opinions or advice on the quality or future prospects of unsuccessful applications.

The Process
1. You submit your application so that FFI receives it by the closing date.
2. All received applications are acknowledged in writing.
3. Applicants who pass the stage 1 competitive review process are asked to participate in an interview. This is either face to face at The University of Queensland, or by telephone for regional and overseas applicants. Interviews take approximately 20 minutes. Interviews typically take place in September / October. Interviews provide an opportunity for applicants to concisely articulate the key aspects and benefits of their research proposals.
4. FFI endeavours to make offers to Fellowships no later than November.
5. FFI’s policy is to advise unsuccessful candidates at the earliest practical time.
To help us, and to help your application
1. Be on time: Make sure we receive your application by the due date.
2. Be complete: Check you have supplied ‘Application’ Items 1 - 6 as per the website. Remember: An incomplete application may jeopardize your prospects.
3. Use the right forms: Use the application form and the referee forms on the website.
4. Post your application: We do not accept emailed or facsimiled applications.
5. Give your referees time: Don’t leave your referee reports to the last minute.
6. ‘Long term’ contact: We need to stay in contact with you. If you are likely to change address, institution, or country during your application, then on your Application Form provide us with personal email and postal details where we will find you even if you are moving around.
7. We will contact you: Please be patient during the review process. While you will be keen to know the status of your application, your ringing or emailing won’t speed up the process. It is best to wait until we contact you.
8. Change in circumstances: If for any reason your circumstances change (for example, you change your course of study, receive another scholarship, or enter full-time employment) you must contact the Registrar in writing immediately in order that your eligibility for a fellowship may be re-assessed. Note: Receipt of another scholarship or full-time employment disqualifies one from receiving an FFI fellowship.

Applications for study in 2010 are due 30th June, 2009
All applications should be signed and dated.
All applications should be typed or neatly handwritten on the application form.
Two sets are required of all the following material.

Maintenance modelling of complex systems
For complex technical systems with many components and that involve many different parties, how to maintain such systems is still a challenging task. This research will address this issue from a systems point of view. The maintenance policy for a technical system is a complex activity that has a huge impact upon the performance of a technical system. To improve the performance of the maintenance of the technical system, we need consider logistics support, spare parts provision, manpower, scheduling and of course the failure characteristics of the system. No single model is capable of dealing with this complex situation, and a high level, systems approach must be adopted, so that modelling techniques such as system dynamics, digital simulations, statistics, and artificial intelligence should be used. Real cases will be studied and a suite of modelling tools will be developed through this study.

Hierarchical forecasting systems
The forecasting needs many companies face nowadays are hierarchical, ranging from the long-term strategic planning, to the medium-term financial and resources allocation, to the thousands of SKUs (stock-keeping units) for production and inventory purposes. The information at different levels should be shared and pooled in order to improve forecasting accuracy. There have been debates on whether the top-down or bottom-up approaches should be used, however, a clear understanding from a theoretical perspective is still lacking. This is a very important research problem to understand how information should be shared at various levels and how forecasts generated at each level can be reconciled. This project will be linked to the research programme of a current EPSRC grant

Duration: 3 years

The funding for this project has been made possible through a Dorothy Hodgkin Postgraduate Award in Resilient Technology.

The project will investigate the use of thermo electric generators in hostile environments, such as those experienced by space probes to the inner solar system. Recent developments suggest that efficiencies close to the theoretical Carnot limit may be possible, but this has not been achieved, with reports in the literature around 10%. The project will investigate the use of a variety of methods including thermogenerators and thermo-tunneling devices and how these perform in regions of high and low temperatures and under simulated solar flares.

This project is due to start in September 2009.

Eligibility and Value of the Award
In line with the DHPA scheme you must be a national from one of the eligible countries listed on the OECD webpage. For more information on eligibility, please also see the Research Council UK’s website.

The award covers tuition fees and maintenance of approximately £13,290 per year.

Person Specification
You must have, or expect to achieve, a first-class Honours degree (or equivalent) in electronic engineering or physics.

NFP PhD Scholarship The Netherlands Fellowship Programmes

The NFP PhD studies is one of the sub-programmes of the NFP. Mid-career professionals who are already in employment and who are nationals of and working in one of the selected countries can apply a fellowship.
The maximum duration of a PhD fellowship is four years. PhD degrees can be pursued at one of the 18 Dutch universities and institutes for international education.
Download the list of Dutch institutions eligible for supervising PhD research (35 kB)

THE FELLOWSHIP
The maximum NFP budget available for a PhD study programme is EUR 74,000. This amount is intended as a contribution towards the costs of living and to cover the costs of visas, travel, insurance, etc. as specified in the NFP booklet ‘Rules and regulations for fellowship holders 2008’.
Download the NFP booklet Rules and regulations for fellowship holders 2008 (560 kB)
PhD students are allowed to seek alternative sources of funding.

ELIGIBILITY

A candidate applying for an NFP fellowship for a PhD degree programme must:
• be a national of and working in one of the 57 developing countries on the list;
• have been unconditionally admitted to a Dutch institution as a PhD student. This means that the applicant must have met all the academic requirements set by the Dutch university or institute;
• have completed an NFP PhD Study application form and have submitted all the required documentation to the Netherlands embassy or consulate;
• offer proof that the PhD will be pursued according to a ‘sandwich’ or ‘picnic’ model, which means that a large portion of the PhD research will take place in the candidate’s home country;
• be nominated by his or her employer, who pledges to continue paying the candidate’s salary and guarantees the candidate will be able to return to an equivalent position after the termination of the fellowship period. Partial payment of salary can sometimes be allowed as an exception to the rule. It is up to the Dutch embassy to decide if an agreement between the employer and the candidate about partial continuation of payment of salary is acceptable. It should be realized, however, that the NFP allowances are not sufficient to support family members, either in the home country or in the Netherlands;
• not be employed by a large industrial, commercial, international or multinational organization, which can be assumed to have sufficient resources of their own to finance staff training;
• offer evidence that he or she is sufficiently skilled in speaking and writing in the language of communication during the PhD, which may be English, French or Spanish. If this is English, candidates who have received their tertiary education in any language other than English must provide evidence in the form of a score in an internationally recognized test, such as IELTS (a score of at least 6.0) or TOEFL (a score of at least 550 points on the paper based test or 213 points on the computer-based test or 79 on the internet-based test). An exception to this rule is made for candidates who have received their tertiary education in English, and for candidates who have previously attended a course or programme at a Dutch educational institution in this language, but no longer than two years ago;
• be available full–time to pursue the PhD without interruption, and be physically and mentally able to take part in the entire programme;
• declare that they will return to their home country immediately after the period of study and research in the Netherlands has ended.

APPLICATION AND SELECTION PROCEDURE
1) Candidates must first apply for academic admission at an eligible Dutch institution. Admission as a PhD student is granted on an individual basis. Senior academic staff or a specific PhD committee decides whether or not an applicant will be accepted. Usually the assessment is based on the research proposal submitted by the applicant.
A candidate can apply for a PhD fellowship only after a research proposal has been agreed between the candidate and the Dutch provider.
Application for a fellowship
2) After receiving their letter of admission, candidates can apply for an NFP fellowship by presenting a completed NFP PhD Study application form to the Netherlands embassy or consulate in the candidate’s own country, accompanied by the necessary documentation.
Download the application form 2009 (82 kB)
The form can also be obtained from the Netherlands embassy or consulate.
Candidates should NOT send their fellowship application forms directly to Nuffic or to the Dutch provider, but should forward them to the Netherlands embassy or consulate in their own country.
3) The embassy or consulate assesses the application against the criteria for eligibility listed above. Special attention is given to:
• whether the application stems from a multi-year agreements concluded with selected organizations;
• the relevance of the proposed research for the candidate’s organization and country;
• proof that the candidate’s employer and the Dutch institution support the application.
4) The embassy or consulate forwards an application that meets all of the criteria for eligibility to Nuffic, together with its own recommendations.
5) Nuffic selects the candidates who will receive PhD fellowships based on the relevance of the proposed research for the candidate’s employing organization and home country. Nuffic gives priority to applications which:
• propose that the research project be co–supervised by an institution in a developing country;
• have a proven link with other activities that are financed by the NFP or other Dutch government-funded activities;
• are submitted by female candidates;
• are submitted by candidates from sub-Saharan Africa;
• stem from multi-year agreements concluded with selected organizations.
6) Nuffic informs the candidate, the Dutch embassy and the providing institution of its decision.
7) Nuffic awards the grant to the provider to cover the fellowship holders’ costs, including the tuition fees.
The Dutch providers pay each fellowship holder an allowance according to the personal budget agreed upon for the duration of the PhD; they also administer the fellowships, make logistical arrangements, and give guidance to the fellowship holders.

DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS
The applications for PhD research projects starting in 2009 must reach the Netherlands embassy or consulate in the applicant’s own country before 1 june and 1 October 2008. Candidates are advised to contact the Netherlands embassy or consulate for country specific information on the NFP.

PhD Position in Food Science at University of Aarhus

Applications are invited for a PhD position at the University of Aarhus, Faculty of Agricultural Sciences (DJF), Department of Food Science. The position is available for three years beginning as soon as possible. Research area and project description
The current knowledge of how dynamic processes during manufacturing affect crystallisation is limited especially when the milk fat is present in both a continuous phase and as milk fat globules, like in butter. An improved knowledge will help solve certain problems about instability of milk fat-based products. Furthermore, it is desirable to add vegetable lipids to milk fat which renders a softer and “healthier” spread product. Again, knowledge is lacking of how this will affect polymorphic transition of the lipids, and how the processes will affect this.

We are looking for a skilled PhD-candidate to study how heating, cooling and shearing of cream, butter and anhydrous milk fat affect the transition of polymorphic crystal forms and the final solid fat content of the products. In addition, the effects of mixing vegetable oils into milk fat on the polymorphic transitions will be studied.

The PhD candidate for this project must have a general background in food science, physical chemistry or biotechnology. A study visit abroad is anticipated during the PhD.

Qualifications
Applicants to the PhD position must have a relevant Master`s degree (or graduate in the very near future - documentation for final thesis and date of examination must be enclosed in the application) or equivalent.

Place of Employment and Place of Work
The place of employment is the University of Aarhus, and the place of work is the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Blichers Allé 20, DK-8830 Tjele.

The PhD-student will be enrolled in the faculty`s Graduate School of Agriculture, Food and Environment (SAFE) and associated with the Danish Food Research School (FOOD Denmark).

FOOD Denmark is a Danish research school with more than 140 PhD students affiliated from the University of Copenhagen - Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Aarhus, University of Southern Denmark and the Technical University of Denmark. FOOD Denmark has close collaboration with some of the most advanced Danish producers of food or food ingredients. The present scholarship is co-financed by Arla Foods, Food Denmark and the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences.

Salary and Terms of Employment
