Theoretical Biology (CTBio) established by the Faculty of Science (University of Gothenburg) in November 2006. The centre brings empirical biologists, mathematicians, and theoretical physicists together. Its goal is to stimulate interdisciplinary collaboration and scientific quality in theoretical biology.

Responsibilities
The appointee is supposed to conduct research independently, and to actively participate in ongoing projects developing coalescent models for meta-populations of a marine invertebrate species, Littorina saxatilis. This species is a widely used model for evolutionary studies and comprehensive background data is available (evolutionary ecology, behavior, population
genetics and intraspecific phylogeny). The project involves intense collaborations, not only with theoreticians, but also with evolutionary biologists.

Qualification requirements
To qualify as a postdoctoral fellow you must have completed a PhD in a relevant subject area or you must have a foreign degree corresponding to a PhD in a relevant subject area. Preference will be given to candidates who have been awarded the degree no more than three years before the final date of application. Candidates being awarded their degree earlier than this can also be
preferred if specific reasons exist. Such specific reasons may be a leave due to illness, parental leave or other similar circumstances.

Assessment
The applicant should have documented familiarity with stochastic models (such as for example branching or coalescent processes) and their computer simulation. A fundamental interest in biological questions is meriting.

Job description

The PhD candidate will undertake research on the external dimension of EU regulatory governance in one or more substantive policy fields linked to the European internal market and the global trading regime. Possible policy fields to be studied include financial regulation, competition/anti-trust, data privacy, product safety (e.g. food and drug safety, GMOs, chemicals), environmental protection (e.g. control of illegal logging, transboundary water management, climate change), food security, and development cooperation.

The position is funded by the EU Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) research project â€˜Global Reordering: Evolution through European Networks (GR:EEN)â€™, and forms part of a work package on â€˜Global Public Policy: Trade and Financeâ€™ directed at the University of Amsterdam by Prof. Jonathan Zeitlin and Dr Daniel MÃ¼gge. This work package focuses on the extension of new or â€˜experimentalistâ€™ forms of governance developed for the regulation of the European internal market to relations with the EUâ€™s trading partners, and their potential contribution to emerging arrangements for global regulatory governance in a rising multi-polar world.

Over the past fifteen years, the EU has developed a new architecture of experimentalist governance based on framework rule-making and revision through recursive review of comparative implementation experience in diverse local contexts. Experimentalist governance architectures of this type have become pervasively institutionalized in the EU across a wide and growing array of policy domains. They take a variety of organizational forms, including networked agencies, councils of national regulators, open methods of coordination, and operational cooperation among front-line officials, often in combination with one another (Sabel and Zeitlin 2008, 2010). Key questions to be addressed in this research project include how far, through what mechanisms, and with what results the revisable framework rules and experimentalist governance processes developed within the European internal market are or may be being extended to the wider world, together with the reciprocal interaction of these efforts with the multilateral trading regime and other emerging forms of global or transnational regulatory governance.

Requirements

The candidate must have a relevant MA degree (or equivalent) in political science or a related social science discipline (including law). Candidates should demonstrate interest in and knowledge of EU and/or global and transnational governance. Excellent oral and written command of English is essential. Experience with qualitative research methods is recommended.

Conditions of employment

We offer a fixed-term position for three years, 38 hours per week, beginning 1 September 2011. The security part of this section is also part of the Eindhoven Institute for the Protection of Systems and Information (EiPSI).

Project description:
Trusted Healthcare Services (THeCS) is a Dutch national project with 12 partners including representatives from industry such as Philips Electronics, Dutch research institutes, such as TNO, Dutch universities (Delft, Twente, Tilburg), and hospitals such as Roessingh hospital. The project addresses the key issue for new healthcare services which is trust. In these services, healthcare providers need to trust the patient data they obtain remotely from the measurement devices deployed in patient's home. It is crucial for them to know that a vital sign of a registered patient is measured (not of his friends/children), that the measurement was taken with a certified device, under standardized conditions (e.g. with the blood pressure cuff on the arm at the heart level) and that it is not obtained as a result of device malfunctioning. Patients need to trust the service in general, as well as that the service will properly protect their personal data. Patients also want the possibility to control their personal health information on social/patient networks. The project will also help patients to participate in social networks while ensuring their privacy and controlling the use of information in a simple intuitive way.

Within the project, TU/e will mainly focus on the trust management work package of home healthcare services to develop technology for physicians and patients to easily determine the trustworthiness of the information. In particular, TU/e goals will be to investigate the issue of data trustworthiness from the home healthcare provider and patient perspectives, as well as to design methods and tools to increase and visualize indicators for data reliability as well as to enable patient compliance to the treatment plan. The PhD student will work on these topics together with a few other TU/e faculty members as well as with Philips Research which is the other partner involved in this work package. The PhD student might also be placed at Philips for a couple of months.

As a PhD student your tasks concern the following activities:

Â· perform scientific research in the described domain;

Â· present results on international conferences;

Â· publish results in scientific journals;

Â· supervise MSc students on topics related to your research;

Â· participate in activities of the group and the department;

Â· assist staff in teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in the domain of the group.

PhD position in Infection Biology at Otto von Guericke Univ Germany

The Institute of Experimental Internal Medicine offers: PhD position (m/f) (TVL-E13/2) in an interdisciplinary project of Infection Biology.

Helicobacter pylori, the etiological agent of several human gastric diseases, induce the transcription factor NF-kappaB in colonized epithelial cells leading to the release of pro-inflammatory mediators.

The project is based on recent discoveries of novel signaling components of the NF-kappaB signaling pathway in mammalian cells. The successful applicants will define the role of this novel signaling molecules in Helicobacter pylori infection model by integrating molecularbiological, physiological and cell biological analysis.

The research program of the institute encompasses scientific projects on the regulation of the NF-kappaB signal transduction in the pathophysiology of inflammation and tumor biology (e.g. differentiation and cell cycle control). Here, the molecular and cell biological mechanisms of the intracellular signal transmission are of special interest. The institute allows an internationally competitive research by providing state of the art technologies in protein analysis, mass spectrometry and microscopy.

The institute coordinates and participates in a variety of coordinated programs funded by the German Research Foundation (GRK1167, SFB854, SFB779, SPP1365 and FOR521), the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (SysTec) and the European Union (Marie Curie Research Training Network).

The Department of Electronics and Automotive Advanced Technology (DELTA), Renault offers CIFRE entitled "Study of electrical insulation systems used in motor vehicles Electrical taking into account their specific environment, to ensure the desired life of the electric motor for future generation.

Background:

The current level of tension and its probable increase in the near future, the use of devices power electronics and the specific constraints they generate (as a voltage, steep edges, high frequencies, etc..), not to mention the operating conditions specific to the application (profiles mission thermal cycles, vibratory stress, etc) make the study of Electrical Insulation System (SIE) motors for electric vehicles (VE) a new field of investigation. Indeed, to ensure the duration Life sought, it is vital to understand the mechanisms of degradation of the dielectric insulation of cables, motor winding and power components. Among the risks, we must consider include:
- Breakdown between turns (same phase or different phases) and turns-frame;
- Failure of impedance of distribution lines accompanied by a sharp surge in response to reflections of Electromagnetic wave;
- Non-negligible parasitic capacitances and forehead steep causing a power surge at the entrance of the winding and intense use of the electrical insulation;
- Inhomogeneous distribution of tension in the coil.

Problem:
The whole question is at what level of exposure to risk of failure is the application. By this I mean, the voltage level is it - given a few peculiar "Inverter - can trigger mechanisms of insulation breakdown, discharge partial (DP) and corona discharge? The answer to that question the whole strategy of choice and design of electrical systems that will be used. As part of this work, we try to answer this question. She will consider innovative methods of detecting these phenomena, developed in a different context (aerospace, defense, rail) and seem particularly interesting (radio frequency detection). After studies at the Laboratory, will seek to deploy detection methods on an engine test bench consists of a Renault engine and its electronic
power.

The Harvard Kennedy School (HKS) Indonesia Program invites Indonesian researchers, academics, and practitioners to apply for Indonesia Research Fellowships for the period January 15 to June 15, 2011 in order to pursue independent research projects at the Rajawali Foundation Institute for Asia, which is part of the Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation of the Harvard Kennedy School. Successful applicants will join a lively community of researchers working on Asia-related issues.

Appointments will run from January 15 to June 15, 2011.
With instructor approval, Research Fellows may “audit” classes at the Harvard Kennedy School or other Harvard schools.
Research Fellows will receive a certificate upon completion, but no degrees will be conferred.
Indonesian Research Fellows will receive shared office space within the Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation.
Fellows will have access to the library system of Harvard University.
For Indonesian Research Fellows, HKS will provide or pay for appropriate housing, health insurance, and a modest living stipend. HKS will not provide international transportation or pay for pre-departure costs. Criteria and Expectations
Fellows must be fluent in both written and spoken English. Application for admission to the exams
The on-line application form can be found and filled on this website. The application must be sent by 24.00 (Central European Time) of 29th October 2010.
The candidate must fill in a new application form for each Research Doctorate course they wish to attend.
After the successful completion of the on line application procedure, the candidate should print , sign and send their application, together with the required annexes, so that it should reach the University of Udine by 13.00 (1 pm) of 2nd November 2010. The official date and time of arrival will be set when the application is recorded at the University of Udine Document Management Office. The postmark will not be considered for the purpose of determining arrival date.

Australian Leadership Awards, a regional program under the Australian

EURANDOM has a vacancy for a postdoctoral researcher in Statistics who will participate in the STW project E-coagulation.
This project will be done in collaboration with the Leiden University Medical Centre, the Utrecht University Medical Centre, the University of Amsterdam, the VU University Amsterdam and Philips Research Eindhoven (Dpt. of Molecular Diagnostics. The focus of the EURANDOM part of this research project is on parameter estimation for large systems of differential equations. Appropriate parametric and semiparametric statistical techniques have to be developed. The research at EURANDOM will be done under the guidance of professors de Gunst (VU) and Klaassen (UvA).
EURANDOM is the European Research Institute for the study of random phenomena. Research at EURANDOM covers stochastics and its applications, as well as its interfaces with other disciplines. Stochastics consists of statistics, probability theory, and stochastic operations research. "Analysis of the behavior of extremes under non-stationary climate conditions"
The PhD researcher is going to work at the Department Climate and Seismology, within the Climate for Knowledge Research Program. The research is a joint project of the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) and EURANDOM.
General information

KNMI is the Dutch national centre for data and knowledge on weather, climate and seismology. KNMI performs scientific research at a recognized high international level. One of the central themes is climate change. KNMI constructs climate scenarios of future climate which are used by society to adapt to possible climate changes. KNMI uses observations, complex numerical climate models and scientific knowledge for that purpose EURANDOM is the European Research Institute for the study of random phenomena. Research at EURANDOM covers stochastics and its applications, as well as its interfaces with other disciplines. Stochastics consists of statistics, probability theory, and stochastic operations research. Job description
Many applications demand knowledge of extreme values in climate. Most infrastructure is (still) designed assuming that our climate is stationary. However, series of measurements show that our climate has changed during the past decades and climate models show that these changes will continue in the future, among others due to human influence on climate. The main question in the research project will be: "How can we optimally account for climate change when the probability of extreme events is to be determined"? This "probability of extremes" is an important parameter for the design of infrastructure. The PhD researcher will contribute to statistical modeling and analysis of extreme values in observations and in projections with regional climate models, with an emphasis on extremes in precipitation and temperature. We expect the candidate to make optimal use of the unique collaboration between KNMI and EURANDOM in order to link actual knowledge in the
area of climate and statistics and further develop it. For this reason the candidate will get two workplaces, one in De Bilt and one in Eindhoven

The Ph.D. courses in Astroparticle Physics, Geometry, Mathematical Physics and Theory of
Elementary Particles start in October; all other courses start in November of each year. They last 3
years and may be extended for a fourth year, subject to approval by the School authorities.

Students who are not citizens of European Union member states have two possibilities to be
admitted to SISSA as a Ph.D student:
1) to pass the regular entrance examination (written and oral) held in Trieste.

2) to pass a Spring preselection based on academic and scientific qualifications as well as on
letters of reference. Students selected in this way will therefore enter the School without
taking the regular entrance examination, but will be expected to pass a qualifying
examination within the first year of study.
Applicants interested in participating in this pre-selection must have a University degree which
qualifies them for a Ph.D programme.
The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) Subject Test is required for applicants in Theory of
Elementary Particles but is also recommended for applicants to the other courses. Any further
information which the candidate may consider useful will be welcome.
An online application must be filled and sent using the procedure available at the page
http://www.sissa.it/applications by the deadlines shown in the schedule of each Ph.D course.
Candidates should upload the following documents in pdf format:
- curriculum vitae et studiorum;
- a certificate of University examinations taken (with marks) in Italian, English, French,
German or Spanish;
- a final degree certificate in Italian, English, French, German or Spanish;
- If, at the time of application, candidates should not be yet in possession of a degree
certificate, they can submit it at the time of the examination.
European Union candidates can submit a personal declaration instead of the
aforementioned certificates.

Candidates will have to indicate the names and email addresses of two professors that will be
asked to send a recommendation letter through the same online procedure.
A confirmation message will be sent to the candidate when he/she will complete the application
process.
The candidate will then have to print out the admission request form, sign it and send it,
together with a copy o fan ID document (i.e. passport) by fax or post to the address printed on the
form itself.
The request form must reach SISSA by 8th April, 2010. Late arrival of the application, for
whatever reason, will not be accepted.

The Bonn-Aachen International Research School of Applied Information
Technology (B-IT Research School) is operated by RWTH Aachen

Scholarship

Erasmus Mundus Master Program in
Data Mining and Knowledge Management (EM-DMKM).

Erasmus Mundus is a certification of excellence which is delivered by
the European community
to the best international master programs in Europe, and it is
supported by very attractive scholarships.

The Erasmus Mundus Master Course in Data Mining and Knowledge Management (DMKM)
proposes specialist training in this field. This is a two years course.
The higher education consortium that organizes the master is composed
of six universities in four countries:

* France (University Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris 6, University
Lumière Lyon 2, Polytech’Nantes - Polytechnic Graduate School of
Nantes University),
* Romania (Technical University of Bucharest),
* Italy (University of Eastern Piedmont Amedeo Avogadro) and
* Spain (Technical University of Catalonia)

The Master’s in DMKM is aimed at students from all over the world.
Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in computer
science, applied mathematics or statistics, as well as a good level of
English (TOEFL 550 or equivalent). Admission is granted on the basis
of a selection procedure. Classes are taught in English and the course
is composed of 18 modules of around sixty hours each.

The course runs over 4 semesters on at least two countries of the
European Union. The first semester is devoted to basic training that
includes theoretical mathematics, statistics, databases, logic,
knowledge representation etc. whereas the two following semesters are
dedicated to acquire 2 specialities among 6 in “E-Science”, “Data
Mining and Complex System Modeling, Application in Social Science”,
“Knowledge and Decision”, “Statistical Modeling and Data Mining”, “Web
Semantic” and “Relational Data Mining”. The fourth semester is devoted
to the writing of a dissertation in either a laboratory or a company.

Language classes will also be provided to ensure that students
integrate as well as possible in socio-cultural terms in the host
country. Each student must spend (6-12) months in at least two of the
4 countries. Students that have obtained 120 ECTS, will automatically
obtain national Master’s degrees from the countries in which they have
studied. Classes are transmitted via video-conferencing. They are also
recorded and accessible on line. Students can benefit, on their site
of residence, from support in the form of tutoring for each course.

Tuition fees are 4,000 € for European students and 8,000 € for other students.

The European Union provides up to 20 scholarships that covers
transportations, subsistence and tuition fees.
It offers also up to 6 scholarships to scholars.

Scholarships and Call for Applications Master of Human Rights and Democratisation (Asia Pacific)

Applications are now being accepted for study and for scholarships in the Master of Human Rights and Democratisation (Asia Pacific) (MHRD).

The MHRD is a unique Master degree program in which students undertake a foundational semester of study at the University of Sydney, and then a second semester at one of the four partner universities:
Gadjah Mada University (Indonesia)
Mahidol University (Thailand)
Katmandu School of Law (Nepal)
University of Colombo (Sri Lanka)

Graduates of the course will gain an interdisciplinary understanding of human rights and democratisation in the Asia Pacific, and will have opportunities to research and examine the application of human rights and democratisation in the field with the partner institutions.

Course Structure
In the first semester at the University of Sydney, students will undertake a foundational course in social science, legal and political approaches to human rights and democratisation. During the second semester students will follow two core units of study complemented by either supervised research, an internship at an in-country organisation specialising in human rights/democratisation or undertake further specialised electives. Students must select one of the four partners universities listed above to undertake their second semester study.

Potential Students
We are looking for people who have a strong commitment to or experience on working on issues about human rights and democratisation. The degree will strongly benefit people already working in, or seeking to work in the fields of human rights and democratisation in our region.

Through a combination of academic and practical educational experiences, the objective of the program is to produce graduates who can support ongoing efforts to strengthen institutions dedicated to the protection and promotion of human rights and democracy and to enhance a regional culture of human rights and democracy. Recognising the critical institutional developments that are taking place both regionally and in particular countries during this time, the program has been set up to ensure that human rights and democracy advocates in the region are well resourced to lead us into the next decades.

Scholarships
Thirty scholarships, covering course fees and a living and travel allowance, will be offered to outstanding applicants from across the Asia Pacific region. This is made possible with the support of a significant grant from the European Commission.

Scholarships will be available to citizens of Asia Pacific countries (a full list of countries is available from the Academic Director upon request). The award of scholarships will be determined by academic qualifications and potential contribution to human rights and democratization.

OCIS - Oxford Scholarships

Launched in 2009, the OCIS - Oxford Scholarships support British Muslim students as well as those from developing countries in Asia and Africa to read for degrees at the University of Oxford. Under the programme, up to five scholarships each year are available for undergraduate students from Muslim communities in Britain. A further five scholarships are available for postgraduate students, at least two of whom will be UK students from Muslim communities, while the rest will be students from specified countries in Asia or Africa. The scholarships are available to students undertaking study in a range of fields relevant to the needs of Muslim societies.

Applications for OCIS - Oxford Postgraduate Scholarships for the academic year 2010-2011 are invited through the University’s normal admissions procedures. The scholarships cover University and college fees and a grant for living costs. An application for a scholarship is made at the time of completion of the Graduate Application Form. Teacher Training Programs: Monbukagakusho Scholarship (Teacher Upgrading)

Registration for the departure in 2009 will be opened on 16 November and closed on January 29, 2010

Teacher Upgrading Program (Teacher Training Program) is one of the Japanese Government scholarship programs (Monbukagakusho) specifically designed for teachers for teaching in accordance with improving qualities. They will be given training in how to teach, making the teaching-learning plan more effectively and attract students and other things that can improve and quality of teachers. This program is a non-degree programs and the length is 1 year 6 months (including 6-month Japanese language learning) from October 2010.

REQUIREMENTS

1. Graduates of S-1 or D-4, and teachers who are actively teaching in elementary, junior, senior high school (including private schools and vocational).
2. Applicant has taught more than 5 years of formal education institutions on April 1, 2010. All fields are offered except, the Indonesian language, local language, Arabic language, religious education and hospitality.
3. Age under 35 years old on April 1, 2010.
4. Physically and spiritually healthy. (female applicants are not allowed in the pregnant condition)
5. Willing to learn Japanese because the language of instruction at the university is in Japanese.

in their quest for funding.

The Graduate School investigates the plurality, changeability, and global connectedness
of Muslim cultures and societies. It invites applications from candidates whose
dissertation project fits one of the Graduate School’s Research Areas.
Successful applicants will have a master’s degree in one of the disciplines
represented at the Graduate School, with a ranking, where applicable, of above

The SEACOAT Network:

The main research goal of the project is to improve understanding of biointerfacial processes involved in the colonisation of surfaces by marine fouling organisms. This will inform the future development of new, environmentally-benign materials and coatings for the practical control of marine biofouling.

Our principal objective is to discover which nano- and micro-scale physico-chemical properties of surfaces influence the adhesion of fouling organisms, through the use of surface engineering technologies to fabricate coatings that vary systematically in relevant surface properties, and length scales.

We will use advanced surface analytical methods to characterise test surfaces for relevant physico-chemical surface properties and how these change after immersion. Parallel adhesion bioassays using a range of representative marine organisms will test intrinsic antifouling properties of surfaces.

Fellows’ individual projects will be integrated into one comprehensive research and training network which is strongly based on exchange and transfers between academia and industry. The network will also provide fellows with network-wide training activities (4 Advanced Training Courses, an international Workshop/symposium). All fellows are expected to collaborate with other Partners in the Consortium through secondments and visits.

PhD opportunity in Geodynamics at the Bayerisches Geoinstitut (Bayreuth, Germany)

The Bayerisches Geoinstitute offers a PhD position in the field of Geodynamics.
The focus of the research will be on the effect of continental lids on the efficiency of mantle convective stirring.

Interpreting surface geochemical data requires the understanding of the mechanisms that can preserve or erase chemical heterogeneities over geological times. The effect of continental lids is known to have a first order impact on mantle convective dynamics and heat transfer. In particular it has be shown that the presence of continents influences the convective wavelength and the time dependency of the mantle motions. However the consequences on the efficiency of convective stirring have not been quantified and studied systematically. This will be the main objective of this thesis, using 2D and 3D numerical modeling of mantle convective motions.

Applicants should hold a master degree in Physics, Geophysics or equivalent. We are seeking for candidates with a solid background in fluid dynamics and heat transfer, knowledge in numerical methods and in one or more programming language (Fortran , C …).
Decent computational facilities are available at the Bayerisches Geoinstitute (www.bgi.uni-bayreuth.de ) and at the University of Bayreuth. Funds will be available for attending international conferences and workshops.

A distinctive feature of the Ph.D. program is the integration of theoretical, technical, and practical expertise, aimed to educate highly qualified professionals, who analyze, plan, and manage concrete interventions of political economy.

Theoretical methodologies and models are generated and tested, through the systematic investigation of the real world, with a distinctive focus on concrete observation of markets and their actors. At the end of the program, students are able to identify commonalities as well as distinctive characters of economies, markets, and industries.

Management and Development of Cultural Heritage
Ph.D. in collaboration with Politecnico di Torino

The program trains both researchers and professionals, able to operate at the highest levels of management of Cultural Heritage and Landscape, in both public and private institutions. The program integrates concepts and methods from several domains (humanities, economics, law, information technologies, material sciences) in the analysis of cultural heritage and landscape.

The program provides a consistent multidisciplinary path where students are provided with competencies which nowadays cannot be obtained but through particular self-training initiatives. The job market today has to rely on various professional figures - thus incurring conflicts and standstills in the decision-making process - or is forced to choose only one competence among all the needed ones.

A distinctive feature of the program is the involvement of Ph.D. students in projects, both on local and international scale, so as to make them familiar with the complex management of cultural heritage and landscape.

Political Systems and Institutional Change

The Ph.D. in Political Systems and Institutional Change is a multidisciplinary course analysing, in a comparative perspective, institutions in their historical, political, sociological, economic and legal features. Special attention will be devoted to processes of institutional change. The Ph.D. aims at forming political analysts able to: plan and manage collaborative and integrated processes at the international level; analyse and assess policies and institutional settings at a supranational, national and regional level; confront the specific problems of countries in transition towards democracy and a market economy.

Duration: 3 years

Language: Courses and seminars are held in English. Foreign Ph.D. students are required to attend an Italian Language and Culture Course.

PhD projects within this school may be rooted in either the natural or social sciences and should be focused on actor and problem oriented research on sustainable human-environmental relationships and decent livelihoods. ICDD promotes three research clusters as a common framework for the design of prospective PhD projects:

1) Sustainable Value Creation for Decent Work
This cluster focuses on strategies to increase value creation by developing technologies for more efficient and sustainable use of resources and by improving human skills, preferably along agricultural commodity chains. PhD applicants should be interested in analysing spatially and sectorally detailed urban-rural linkages to address the mobility of people, goods, services, money transfers, information, and associated flows of nutrients, energy and water.

This cluster focuses on the effectiveness of existing instruments in enforcing minimum standards for labour as formulated by the International Labour Organization (ILO) such as public procurement, supply chain governance, and national minimum wages. PhD applicants should be interested in analysing such instruments and their effective implementation in different state contexts. A special focus should be directed towards their impact on or relevance for informal labour relations and particularly on the working conditions and lives of temporary labour migrants.

3) Strategies of Empowerment for Decent Work
This cluster focuses on the advocacy of good working conditions within economic and political decision-making processes against the background of eroding capacities of workers to engage in collective action due to the growing informal nature of work. Thereby special attention is directed towards particularly vulnerable groups, such as domestic workers. PhD applicants should be interested in exploring possible sources and forms of organisations to foster empowerment strategies within informal labour relations.

Scholarships

PhD students of the Graduate School will be based either at the University of Kassel or at one of ICDD’s international partner universities (see above), and will be enrolled in the respective university’s PhD training programmes. Please indicate in your application at which university you wish to be located. A joint international workshop programme on subjects of the ICDD, research methods, the linkage between theory and empirical research and for the presentation of the prospective PhD projects will take place every year within the Graduate School.
Scholarships will be awarded for four years under the precondition of a successful extension after one year. The scholarships will cover a country-specific monthly allowance according to DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) standards. All scholarships will include travel expenses for south-north and south-south mobility if necessary and funding for field research and the participation in Graduate School and ICDD activities.

Nine Early Stage Researcher (ESR) positions in five locations (EPFL,
TU Berlin, Technion, FORTH, and U Rennes I)
are funded by the European Commission under the Marie Curie Initial
Training Network Program (project TransForm).

We address (pre-PhD) researchers aiming at significantly improving
their career perspectives from both the
public and private sector.

The duration of the appointment is 3 years, with a possibility of
extension funded from other sources.

RESEARCH TOPIC

The ESRs will pursue research on the general area of concurrent
computing and in particular on the theoretical
foundations of transactional memory.

Multicore architectures have come to stay; yet multicore is useless
without concurrent programming. The
current parallel programming approach of employing locks is widely
considered to be too difficult for any but
a few experts. Transactional Memory (TM) is a new programming
paradigm which is considered by many
researchers as the future of parallel programming. To understand
properly TM systems as well as be able to
assess them and improve them, a rigorous theoretical study of the
approach, its challenges and its benefits is
badly needed.

This is the challenging research goal to be undertaken by the recruited ESRs.

first four years of their research careers

Background and Aims of the Project
Substantial gains have been made in global health, including reductions in overall and
child mortality in developing countries. However, progress remains uneven and there are
growing differences in mortality, morbidity and disease burden rates according to
geographical region. For example, communicable diseases, maternal and perinatal
conditions, and micronutrient deficiencies cluster in the tropics and subtropics, and
contribute to delay the social and economic development. Improving the health and
livelihoods of the global poor could save millions of healthy life years, enhance equity
and alleviate poverty, and hence contribute to achieving the millennium development
goals (MDGs). Certain MDGs are addressed by global alliances and partnerships; e.g. the
control of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. Fewer efforts are placed on the so-called
neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), e.g. helminth infections and zoonoses. The focus of
this project is on the epidemiology and control of NTDs in semi-arid and humid contexts
in Central and West Africa.

The goal of this proposal is to deepen our understanding of morbidity patterns and
transmission dynamics of NTDs in two eco-epidemiological settings of Africa,
and to study the effects of control interventions aiming at reducing the burden due to
NTDs. This will entail the development of methods and analytical tools for demographic
surveillance of a highly mobile population in Chad, and a rural sedentary population in
south-central Côte d’Ivoire. These demographic surveillance system (DSS) sites will
serve as platforms to monitor changes in morbidity patterns following locally-adapted
interventions.

RESEARCH ASSOCIATE POSITION Offshoring Research Network Duke University, Fuqua School of Business

Position summary

The Offshoring Research Network (ORN) at the Fuqua School of Business, Duke University, is seeking to hire a Research Associate for a period of two years, starting Summer/Fall 2009. The Research Associate will be expected to carry out survey-based and/or case study-based research on offshoring, outsourcing and the globalization of services.

ORN multi-year surveys
The international ORN project was initiated in 2004 by the Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER) at the Duke Fuqua School of Business. The ORN project conducts both quantitative, survey-based research and qualitative case studies. It solicits two major annual surveys.

The ORN Corporate Client Survey tracks the adoption of offshoring and outsourcing administrative and technical functions, e.g. IT, finance & accounting, software and product development, by client companies across industries, from pioneering early adopters to the majority adopters. It includes data e.g. on offshoring drivers, risks, location choices, delivery models, performance outcomes and future plans. Unlike other surveys, this survey tracks offshoring and outsourcing activities over time by discrete functional implementation projects. It also includes companies that only consider offshoring and even those that have not considered offshoring yet. In collaboration with research partners worldwide, the ORN survey has been extended year by year. It has been taken by more than 1,500 companies from the U.S., Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Scandinavia, and Belgium, and it will include companies from Italy, Korea, Australia and other countries.

The ORN Service Provider Survey, which was launched in 2007 for the first time, investigates the service providers’ perspective of offshoring. It covers questions about service profiles, the choice of service location, client contracts and relationships, risks involved with providing services, the recruitment and management of talent, future plans and outsourcing trends, and many other aspects.

ORN case studies
Parallel to the collection and analysis of survey-based data, the ORN project also involves complementary case studies investigating not only companies’ various experiences with offshoring, but also their internal routines, processes and capabilities that differentiate early from late adopters of the new business practice as well as more and less successful offshoring companies. In particular, ORN research is focusing on companies offshoring higher-level, innovation-centered activities and processes. Taking a co-evolutional research perspective, the ORN project also investigates the emergence of new geographical knowledge clusters and institutions guiding offshoring/outsourc ing activities.

In addition to developing knowledge on companies’ offshoring practices, the project seeks to develop theoretical concepts and frameworks partly based on the cases, explaining the emergence, adoption, and diffusion of offshoring practices and underlying capabilities within and across companies, industries, and countries. Audiences of the research results include both business practitioners and academics. Although the candidate’s main focus will be on academic research, he/she will have to maintain a strong orientation towards the business implications of the research findings.

Job requirements
The Research Associate will work in close collaboration with the other members of the international ORN research team and will participate in all aspects of the research projects, including data collection and analysis, and crafting research papers. The candidate will participate in developing practitioners- oriented presentations and in writing Thought Leadership articles for the business community. He or she will also be involved in designing and running selected courses for MBA students and executive MBAs. In addition, he or she is expected to work together with our sponsoring organizations and partners, including PricewaterhouseCoop ers and The Conference Board, in conducting custom research and various other projects. PhD Fellowship in systems biology of human metabolism

The Center of Systems Biology, University of Iceland is looking to recruit a highly motivated PhD students to join a growing effort focusing on systems biology of human metabolism. The research at the CSB UoI focuses on 1) human metabolism and 2) industrial biotechnology. The Center is an interdisciplinary center with the Schools of Medicine, Engineering and Natural Sciences participating.

The CSB UoI aims to characterize human disease using a systems biology approach. This research effort includes on 1) expanding the currently available human metabolic reconstruction, 2) discovery of new functions and pathways in human metabolism using computational and experimental techniques, 3) phenotyping of human cell lines using metabolomic techniques, 4) computational and experimental analysis of metabolic changes associated with disease, and 5) high-throughput drug screening. We use the state-of-the-art computational methods to guide and design human cell culturing experiments as well as metabolomic measurements. These technologies are embedded in a biologically driven research program that aims at systematic understanding of human metabolism, disease manifestation and drug target identification.

Job description:

directed by Professor Jennifer Stromer-Galley that aims to predict real
world characteristics of players in virtual worlds, such as World of

technical support, monitoring player interactions, conducting literature
searches, and data collection and data analysis. The RA should have a

2 PhD students in the EU project DESTECS

Introduction

The efficient design of embedded control systems (i.e. mechatronics / robotics software) is hampered by the separation of engineering disciplines in current state of the art development approaches. A methodology to address system-level design issues across discipline boundaries is lacking and tool support is poor. This “design gap” inhibits iterative and concurrent engineering, leading to sub-optimal designs and long development lead times. Moreover, the design gap is widening because of increasing system complexity and increasing capabilities of the system artifacts used.

About the project

DESTECS is inspired by the vision of collaborative multidisciplinary design of embedded systems using a methodology and tools that promote rapid construction and evaluation of system models, with both methods and tools validated against real industry need and evaluated on industrial applications.
DESTECS will research and develop methods and open tools that support the collaborative design of dependable real-time embedded control systems using a model-based approach. This means that engineers can perform design evaluation and analysis using co-simulation of models expressed in different tools that reflect in a natural way the relevant aspects of the design but which can be analysed consistently and rapidly together. This requires advances in continuous time modelling, formal discrete event modelling of controllers and architectures, fault modelling and tolerance, and open tools frameworks. Bringing these together in methods and tools has the potential to substantially improve the cost-effectiveness of model-based design.

The two Ph.D. candidates at the Control Laboratory within the DESTECS project will be responsible for:

To research and develop methods that support the collaborative modelling and analysis by co-simulation of candidate designs for dependable embedded control systems; and to deliver guidelines, templates and tool prototypes for using co-simulation as a means for exploring candidate designs during development.

To research and develop methods that provide structuring mechanisms for models such that co-simulation, re-use of sub-models and concurrent design of models can be supported; and to deliver guidelines, techniques and tool prototypes for model code versioning control.

What we ask

An MSc or comparable degree in electrical / computer engineering or computer science with demonstrated abilities in the fields of research described above: model structuring, (co)-simulation and tool design, with application area robotics / mechatronics. Concepts and objectives
The leading aim of the project is to identify and study the turning points in molecular pathways of immune response and cancer, in which the single cell fate, understood as a choice between apoptosis, senescence, proliferation, differentiation or cell cycle arrest, is decided. As a model molecular pathways we will consider these related to innate and adaptive immune response and cancer, in which we have expertise. The project will be realized both by means of numerical simulations and theoretical analysis.

We have the open positions for undergraduate students (with the third year finished), PhD students and postdoctoral researchers

For MSc (undegraduate, after third year) students:

1. Stochastic gene expression: numerical simulations and mathematical analysis.

We invite all enthusiastic and motivated B.A. graduates with a strong interest in linguistics, and all its theoretical, psychological, sociological, empirical, and computational aspects to enroll in the new M.A. Program in Linguistics.

Duration and contents: The program lasts four semesters (= 2 years) and comprises four obligatory core courses. Students choose from a large number of elective courses according to their personal interests and specialization area, including for example: theoretical, empirical, and computational linguistics, phonetics, phonology, psycholinguistics, and second language acquisition research.

The MA program complements the classical linguistic education with experimental and empirical research methods. It offers a strong computer and technology orientation, and thus practical and hands-on experience in modern linguistic research domains.

Creative thinking and advancement of teamwork are essential values conveyed throughout the program, accompanied by individual and intensive tutoring involving current research issues.

Acquired skills and knowledge:

Degree

Description:

The Department of Linguistics at Stockholm University invites applications for a
four-year studentship within its PhD programme in Computational Linguistics,
with start date January 1, 2010.

We would especially welcome thesis projects with a potential for
cross-fertilizing areas within the department and/or with partners in the Human
Language Technology Center in the Stockholm-Uppsala University Network

General information

Applicants must have an undergraduate degree including at least an equivalent of
the Swedish “magister” programme in General Linguistics. This programme focuses
on linguistic theory and comprises four years of study including the writing of
two research papers. Applicants from all countries are welcome. Knowledge of
Swedish is not a formal requirement but students are strongly advised to acquire
a working knowledge of Swedish as soon as possible (language courses are offered

During the period of the studentship, the student is a regular employee of the
University. The beginning salary is 21,600 SEK a month (approximately 2,100
Euros or 3,100 USD).

The first period of employment is for one year. The employment contract can then
be renewed for at most two years at a time, up to a total of four years, or, if
the student accepts teaching or administrative duties at the department (not
exceeding 20% of full time), maximally five years.

Funded within the Excellence Initiative of the German Research Foundation
(DFG), the Graduate School of the Cluster “Languages of Emotion” has as its
aim the supervision of exceptional dissertation projects pertinent to the
research of the Cluster. The graduate school offers intensive and individual
supervision of the thesis as well as a structured course of studies.
The research of the cluster is dedicated to the complex interrelations between
the use of signs/symbols, the transfer of emotions, aesthetic practices,
mental dispositions and affective modes of constructing both personal and
social identities the cluster. The graduate school focuses on the following
research areas:
- the relations between affective phenomena and various representational
media (language, sound, image);
- the artistic practices and poetics of (re)presenting/ shaping emotion;
- correlations between emotional and linguistic competencies (and their
disorders)
- modes of emotion modelling at the level of cultural codes and patterns of
social behavior and identity.

Applicants interested in pursuing a doctorate with an emphasis in one of the

Who Can Apply?

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible to apply for a Daniels Scholarship, students

Novo Scholarship Programme 2010in Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Sciences

Novo Nordisk and Novozymes offer scholarships to support graduate training of some of the best students in biotechnology and pharmaceutical sciences, including bioinformatics, molecular biology, systems biology, translational medicine, microbiology, protein chemistry, biophysics, pharmacology, medical research methodology, pharmacy, drug delivery and biomedical devices. The purpose is to allow selected students at universities in Denmark and Lund University to devote full time to their MSc thesis (speciale).

Who can apply:
Students enrolled at either a Danish university or Lund University at the time of submitting the application. The university supervisor must be associated with the same institution. The student can, however, spend some time at an institution outside the university such as Novo Nordisk/Novozymes R&D labs or an institution abroad. Master students already performing their thesis work at Novo Nordisk /Novozymes cannot apply.

The scholarship offer:
The scholarship amounts to approx. DKK 75,000 for a full year and cannot be extended. Applications for shorter periods can be accepted. It is expected that the student does not take on paid work during the scholarship period. Recipients can apply for additional support of max DKK 6,000 during a period of up to six months after the expiration of the scholarship. This allowance supports participation in international meetings to present the results of the funded project. The scholarship can be initiated anytime between 1 February, 2010 and 1 September, 2010.

The research project must be of high scientific quality and must be supported by a contact person at Novo Nordisk or Novozymes. It is a prerequisite that the applicant identifies a contact person with research competences within the scientific area or technologies applied in the project. Economics, Markets, Institutions

A distinctive feature of the Ph.D. program is the integration of theoretical, technical, and practical expertise, aimed to educate highly qualified professionals, who analyze, plan, and manage concrete interventions of political economy. Theoretical methodologies and models are generated and tested, through the systematic investigation of the real world, with a distinctive focus on concrete observation of markets and their actors. Management and Development of Cultural Heritage
Ph.D. in cooperation with Politecnico di Torino

The program trains both researchers and professionals, able to operate at the highest levels of management of Cultural Heritage and Landscape, in both public and private institutions. The program integrates concepts and methods from several domains (humanities, economics, law, information technologies, material sciences) in the analysis of cultural heritage and landscape. The program provides a consistent multidisciplinary path where students are provided with competencies which nowadays cannot be obtained but through particular self-training initiatives. The job market today has to rely on various professional figures - thus incurring conflicts and standstills in the decision-making process - or is forced to choose only one competence among all the needed ones. A distinctive feature of the program is the involvement of Ph.D. students in projects, both on local and international scale, so as to make them familiar with the complex management of cultural heritage and landscape.

Political Systems and Institutional Change

The Ph.D. in Political Systems and Institutional Change is a multidisciplinary course analysing, in a comparative perspective, institutions in their historical, political, sociological, economic and legal features. Special attention will be devoted to processes of institutional change. The Ph.D. aims at forming political analysts able to: plan and manage collaborative and integrated processes at the international level; analyse and assess policies and institutional settings at a supranational, national and regional level; confront the specific problems of countries in transition towards democracy and a market economy.

Language: Courses and seminars are held in English. Foreign Ph.D. students are required to attend an Italian Language and Culture Course.

At the Department of Economics at Aarhus School of Business, Aarhus University, a PhD scholarship will be available from December 1, 2009 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The PhD scholarship is linked to a multidisciplinary research project entitled “Made in Denmark anno 2050 – The role of firms in globalisation”, concerning the export success factors of Danish companies. The scholarship is in economics, but part of a larger multidisciplinary research project carried out in collaboration between the GlobID research group at the Department of Economics and the Centre for Design of Global Enterprise (DoGE) at the Department of Management. It is funded by the Tuborg Foundation and the Danish Agency for Science, Technology and Innovation.

The PhD student will be placed at the GlobID research group at the Department of Economics at Aarhus School of Business, Aarhus University, and is expected to partake in large-scale data analysis, econometric investigations as well as in writing of academic articles and communication of research results. PhD students in Denmark work under very favourable terms: They are employed on a full-time basis for three years, and the salary is enough to cover all necessary accommodation and living costs and to lead an active life. A PhD student does not pay university fees.

PhD students at Aarhus School of Business, Aarhus University (ASB), work under almost the same terms as other research staff, i.e. they have their own office space with a computer, incl. Internet access, email, phone etc., as well as access to secretarial assistance etc. Moreover, expenses in connection with the scientific work are covered, e.g. participation in research courses and academic conferences in Denmark and abroad.

There are also good and well-paid job opportunities in Denmark for people with a PhD degree, both within and outside the university sector.

A PhD student in Denmark must complete an individually planned PhD course programme within the relevant research area and conduct a research project under the supervision of experienced senior researchers. As part of the PhD scholarship the PhD student will be enrolled in the PhD programme comprising a number of courses within the relevant research area.

The PhD student is also expected, as part of the programme, to spend some time (up to six months), with coverage of travel and accommodation expenses, at another – often foreign – research institution. During the programme, the PhD student is further expected to gain teaching experience within the subject area as well as experience with other forms of dissemination of research results. ASB also finances participation in relevant PhD courses and scientific conferences. In addition, it is expected that PhD students participate in and contribute to the other activities of the department.

Conditions of employment
The PhD scholarship has duration of three years. Graduates and students expecting to complete their study programme in the near future may apply for the scholarship. The employment is covered by a national collective agreement.

Economics, Markets, Institutions

The program aims at dealing with issues in political economy, applied public economics, the functioning of industries and markets, the impact of macroeconomics on productivity and growth. A distinctive feature of the Ph.D. program is the integration of theoretical, technical, and practical expertise, aimed to educate highly qualified professionals, who analyze, plan, and manage concrete interventions of political economy. Theoretical methodologies and models are generated and tested, through the systematic investigation of the real world, with a distinctive focus on concrete observation of markets and their actors. At the end of the program, students are able to identify commonalities as well as distinctive characters of economies, markets, and industries.

Management and Development of Cultural Heritage
Ph.D. in cooperation with Politecnico di Torino

The program trains both researchers and professionals, able to operate at the highest levels of management of Cultural Heritage and Landscape, in both public and private institutions. The program integrates concepts and methods from several domains (humanities, economics, law, information technologies, material sciences) in the analysis of cultural heritage and landscape. The program provides a consistent multidisciplinary path where students are provided with competencies which nowadays cannot be obtained but through particular self-training initiatives. The job market today has to rely on various professional figures - thus incurring conflicts and standstills in the decision-making process - or is forced to choose only one competence among all the needed ones. A distinctive feature of the program is the involvement of Ph.D. students in projects, both on local and international scale, so as to make them familiar with the complex management of cultural heritage and landscape.

Political Systems and Institutional Change

The Ph.D. in Political Systems and Institutional Change is a multidisciplinary course analysing, in a comparative perspective, institutions in their historical, political, sociological, economic and legal features. Special attention will be devoted to processes of institutional change. The Ph.D. aims at forming political analysts able to: plan and manage collaborative and integrated processes at the international level; analyse and assess policies and institutional settings at a supranational, national and regional level; confront the specific problems of countries in transition towards democracy and a market economy.
Duration: 3 years

Language: Courses and seminars are held in English. Foreign Ph.D. students are required to attend an Italian Language and Culture Course.

The following interdisciplinary areas or “clusters” are offering scholarships:

1) The Changing Family in Asia (Research Leader: Prof Gavin Jones)
This cluster explores the dimensions of family change in the region, their causes and their implications. These dimensions include rising ages at marriage, declining size of the nuclear family, increase in one-person households and alternative family forms, changing gender roles within families, and changes in family structures. They are studied in the context of the changing political-economic structures and changing state/family roles in provision of services and support.

2) The Migration Cluster (Research Leader: Professor Brenda Yeoh) explores the issues arising from increased levels of human mobility in the region, both within and across national borders. Mobility of high-level professional and managerial personnel, labour migration, both documented and undocumented, and human trafficking all raise theoretical and methodological questions and major policy issues, as does the role of migration in urban change.

3) The Religion and Globalisation Cluster (Research Leader: Professor Bryan Turner) explores the changing patterns of religious practice, belief and identity in recent times, particularly in Southeast Asia, China and South Asia. The title implies a particular interest in transnational and diasporic interactions, the engagement with modern technologies and values, and new global or ‘glocal’ forms of identity.

4) The Cultural Studies Cluster (Research Leader: Professor Chua Beng Huat) consciously challenges disciplinary boundaries to address new topics, issues and concerns thrown up by the rapid globalization of contemporary cultures. ARI is interested in new understandings of the everyday life cultural practices of contemporary Asia, as in adaptations of older patterns in literature, and the performing and graphic arts, in rapidly changing contemporary conditions.

5) The Southeast Asia-China Interactions Cluster (Research Leader: Professor Anthony Reid) will welcome students in two project areas: The Cold War in Asia, relating particularly to relations between the two Chinas (CCP and KMT) and the parties, movements and governments of Southeast Asia; and issues of heritage recovery and archaeology in Aceh and Sumatra more generally.

6) The Asian Cities Cluster (Research Leaders: Prof Heng Chye Kiang & Prof Chua Beng Huat) is housed in School of Design and Environment (SDE), Department of Architecture (NUS). This cluster focuses especially on cutting-edges areas of rapid change and the identity of Asia cities, notably including: the impact of rapid urbanization, adapting and conserving heritage to a changing urban environment, and urban environmental planning. It will build collaborative and interdisciplinary connections among the colleagues from the Humanities and Social Science faculties in NUS.

ARI is a university-level institute formed in July 2001 as one of the strategic initiatives of the NUS. The mission of the Institute is to produce and promote world-class research on Asia. ARI engages the social sciences and humanities broadly defined, and encourages especially multidisciplinary studies. What is the Anglo-Hellenic Doctoral Community?

The Anglo-Hellenic doctoral community presents a unique opportunity to
bring together a range of expertise from Scotland and Greece in order to
support the development of talented doctoral students who wish to engage
in empirical research in Greece. Such a community offers opportunities,
that otherwise may not be available, to study at a leading UK
University. Students will spend up to 60% of their academic year in
Athens, gaining experience in a range of research activities. The Athens
Institute for Education and Research (ATINER) (www.atiner.gr) seeks to
support this endeavour with academic expertise and supervision offered
by its director Dr Gregory T. Papanikos, and also financially by
providing a scholarship fund to help support exceptional doctoral
candidates. Strathclyde University Business School (SBS)
(www.strath.ac.uk/business) will provide academic supervision, high
quality facilities, post-graduate research training, and academic
standards and validation, and Professor Sharon Bolton will offer

Studying for a PhD at Strathclyde University Business School

PhD students will be expected to pursue structured, supervised research
into one of the many business-related fields in which Strathclyde
Management School has expertise. Particularly, members of the
Anglo-Hellenic Doctoral Community will focus on producing innovative
research that will be of importance to the academic, policy and business
communities in Greece, UK, Europe and beyond.

The minimum research period for a full-time PhD is 3 years. At the end
of this period, candidates will be expected to write an extended thesis,
demonstrating evidence of their capacity to pursue scholarly research
that is reflective and offers critical insight into an under-researched
area. The results of their research should make an original contribution
to knowledge and be of a standard appropriate for dissemination and
publication to a wide audience.

Where will the Anglo-Hellenic Doctoral Community reside?

The Anglo-Hellenic Doctoral Community will be based in the Department of
Management, Strathclyde University Business School (SBS). Students will
register at SBS, be involved with induction activities and attend
Research Training. They will attend the Department of Management’s
annual ‘doctoral day’ in October and be expected to present their
research as part of the departmental seminar series in year two and
three of their studies. As networking and knowledge exchange activities
will be at the heart of the Anglo-Hellenic Doctoral Community’s
activities, students will also be expected to submit papers to
international academic conferences in years two and three, and also to
present and attend the ATINER conferences that take place every summer
in Athens as a means of regularly networking with academics from all
over the world. Special seminars and workshops will also be held at
ATINER covering methodological issues, and the European business and
economic environment. Depending on supervisory arrangements, members of
the cohort may spend up to 60% of their academic year in Athens,
studying under the supervision of Dr Gregory T. Papanikos. For those
students who receive scholarships, summers in Athens will be spent
conducting research assistance work for ATINER (supporting projects and
the conference season).

Fees and Administration

Candidates offered a place to study as part of the Anglo-Hellenic
Doctoral Community will be registered at Strathclyde University as
full-time Doctoral candidates from October 2009. Current Fees: 3,450 GB
Pounds per year which includes registration, attendance at research
training classes, supervision, full use of Strathclyde University’s
postgraduate student facilities and support services, and administration
of the cohort by Professor Sharon Bolton, Department of Management.

It is expected members of the Anglo-Hellenic Doctoral Community will
submit their completed theses following three years of study. The theses
will be examined according to Strathclyde procedures and standards. Each
member of the Anglo-Hellenic Doctoral Community will be assessed
annually by an independent panel of experts drawn from Strathclyde
University, appointed by the department of Management, SBS, as per the
Strathclyde system. Students who do not make satisfactory progress will
be advised either to aim to complete the degree of MPhil or to cease
study entirely. The decision of the panel will be final.

Members of the Anglo-Hellenic Doctoral Community will receive academic
supervision from either Dr Gregory T. Papanikos or Professor Sharon
Bolton, with co-supervisors based at Strathclyde appointed according to
student proposals and supervisory availability. Professor Sharon Bolton
will also act as overall leader of the cohort and the main point of
contact for all matters relating to student admission, registration,
progress and monitoring of periods spent in Athens.
Scholarships

ATINER intends to offer a total scholarship fund of 90,000 euros over a
period of three years. Scholarships will be awarded to exceptional
applicants to support their period of study. Scholarships may take the
form of support scholarships or fees only. Candidates will be awarded
scholarships for a period of three years – however, annual renewal of
funding will depend entirely on academic progress and contribution to
the Anglo-Hellenic Doctoral Community.

Entry Requirements

Before applying to become a member of the Anglo-Hellenic Doctoral
Community, candidates need to be sure that they have a keen personal
interest in the topic they will be researching - and an interest in the
process of research. They will need a strong academic background and the
motivation to pursue independent research for a period of 3 years.

For registration as a PhD student, candidates will need:

• A first degree equivalent to a UK 2:1 and above, i.e. GPA 3.2 or
better/ a GMAT score of 600 or above.

• A Master’s degree with a significant research component in the Social
Sciences (and associated disciplines) or applied economics, with grades
at Merit and Distinctions levels.

• Evidence is also required that a candidate’s English proficiency is
adequate for high level academic study. Leading UK universities ask for
an IELTS balanced test score of at least 7.0. If candidates are unable
to take the IELTS then an IB TOEFL score of at least 100 may be
accepted. A Cambridge Proficiency Certificate in English (grade C) may
also be accepted. Oral language skills will also be assessed at interview

• Two References – one must be from someone who can vouch for academic
ability.

Group: Laboratory for Biomaterials and Bioengineering (LBB), Québec City, CANADA Director: Prof. Diego Mantovani Project The LBB is offering a 3 years PhD position for the development of highly-adherent and strongly-
cohesive fluorocarbon nano-coatings for intravascular stents, and bio-mimicking coatings for cardio vascular implants. The proposed PhD project focuses on the surface treatments of metallic biomaterials with different plasma technologies (polymerization, functionnalisation, implantation,
etching), complementary nanotechnology tools (AFM for imaging, in situ corrosion and mechanical properties), surface characterization techniques (XPS, ToF-SIMS, NEXAFS, X-PEEM), and others.

The PhD student will be involved in an international multidisciplinary project and it is foreseen that
the student will be sent out for research stays to deepen the cooperation with our worldwide partners (France, Belgium, Argentina, Brazil, Spain, Mexico, Italy, Germany) and be involved about new methods/ideas and implementation issues at the cutting edge of the science. A co-tutelle de thèse with
French partners might be envisaged depending the ability, personality, and motivation of the candidate. Research at LBB is highly project-oriented, and students with different but complementary backgrounds are often working together on a common project, each exploring a specific facet.
Skills A master degree in chemistry, physics, materials or engineering is highly recommended. Prior experience in vacuum, surface modification by plasma or plasma chemistry is considered as an added value, but not essential. Working languages are French and English, the candidate should rapidly

WHO CAN APPLY

Students of any country and age with one of the following degrees:
• academic title conferred by foreign institutions, recognised as equivalent to an Italian title by the relevant academic authorities, also considering inter-university specific agreements of cooperation and mobility;
• an Italian laurea specialistica (3+2 years) or laurea magistrale (5 years)
• an Italian university degree - pre-reform regime (4 years).
Note: to be admitted to the competition applicants must obtain the 2nd level degree no later than October 31, 2009.

Applicants with a foreign university degree (not validated by an Italian authority yet):
In order to obtain the certification of equivalence by this University Teachers’ Board and for the sole purposes of the admission, applicants with a foreign university degree must attach to the application form:

- a certified copy of the University degree with the complete list of exams, the translation into Italian and the relevant authentication.
- a “Statement of validity” (Dichiarazione di valore) of the above mentioned document by the Italian Embassy or the Italian Consulate set in the country of the University which have released this document. This statement of validity must certify that the title is suitable for admission to an academic course at the same level of the PhD in the country where it has been released.
- applicants may also include all documentation, duly certified and translated into Italian, which may be judged appropriate for the purposes of the evaluation by part of the Teachers’ Board (courses, programs, exams, etc).

Note: admission is sub condicione for those candidates with foreign university degree who cannot deliver the required documents before the admission competition.
Documents must be delivered before the enrolment to the course.

Australian Development Scholarships (ADS) Australia Indonesia Partnership

Each year, the Australian Government sponsors people from a number of developing countries to study in Australia through Australian Development Scholarships (ADS). The Australian Development Scholarship program in Indonesia aims to promote private and public sector human resource development in areas of agreed development priority.

This is achieved by providing post-graduate scholarships for Indonesians to study in Australia and by working in close cooperation with the Indonesian Government to deliver a program which is flexible to Indonesia’s human resource development needs.
ELIGIBILITY

In General, Candidates must :

Be an Indonesian citizen and not have permanent residence in Australia or New

* Zealand;
* Not be married or engaged to a person who is eligible to hold Australian or New Zealand citizenship or permanent residence;
* Satisfy Australian Government requirements for international student entry to Australia (health, character etc);
* Not hold a scholarship that would give similar benefits;
* Not have held an Australian Government Scholarship in the 12 months preceding the application;
* Be applying to commence a new course of study and not be seeking support through ADS for a course already commenced in Australia;
* Be able to take up the scholarship in the year for which it is offered; and
* Satisfy the admission requirements of the Australian tertiary institution in which the course is to be undertaken.

Specifically, Candidates must :

* Be applying for courses that fall within the four areas of development priority;
* Have a Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 2.9 (on a scale of maximum 4.0) and an English language proficiency of at least 5.0 in IELTS (or 500 in Institutional TOEFL or equivent). The IELTS or TOEFL result must be current (a test result obtained in 2008 or 2009 will be considered current);
* Already hold an undergraduate degree, if applying for a Masters;
* Already have a Masters, if applying for a Doctorate;
* Apply for a degree at a level higher than their current highest qualification;
* If applying for a Doctorate, applicants must be staff of universities, higher education institutions, research institutes, key policy makers and targeted candidates in other agencies associated with AusAID activities. It is highly desirable for Doctorate applicants to have a letter of support from an Australian university for their proposed field of study;
* Answer all relevant questions on the application form;
* Be willing and available to take full-time (Monday - Friday, 08.00 - 16.00)English for Academic Purposes(EAP) training in Indonesia prior to studying in Australia, if offered a scholarship; and
* Be not older than 42 years old at time of application.

NUMBER OF AWARDS AND STUDY OPTIONS

The number of ADS awards each year will depend on Australian government budget appropriations. In the 2009/2010 ADS cycle, 300 ADS scholarships are available for commencement in 2010/2011. The scholarships are allocated as follows:

* 2/3 of all awards will be offered to applicants from the public sector category;
* 1/3 of all awards will be offered to applicants from the open category;
* Up to 50% of awards overall will be offered to applicants from the Targeted Category;
* Up to 30% of all awards will be offered to applicants from Geographic Focus Areas.The geographic focus will include East Nusa Tenggara, West Nusa Tenggara, Papua, West Papua, and Aceh;;
* 90% of all awards will be offered at Masters level (270) and 10% of all awards will be offered at PhD level (30); and
* An equal number of awards will be offered to males and females

LENGTH OF STUDY AND COURSE OPTIONS

Scholarships will be available for full-time study of an Australian post-graduate qualification for the minimum period required to complete the award through the relevant Australian university, selected from AusAID contracted universities (normally a maximum of 2 years for Masters and 4 years for Doctorate).

*Description of the position:*

Over the last two decades, we see new ways of funding and programming of
research and knowledge production. Large scale research programmes are
set up, characterized by collaboration between academia, industry and
societal actors. These programmes aim to develop knowledge which
contributes to economic development or societal problem solving. In
close cooperation with a team of senior and junior researchers, you will
conduct research into the dynamics and effects of such large-scale
multi-actor research programmes. There will be a focus on programs in
the field of both climate adaptation and water research. The research is
carried out in cooperation with KWR Watercycle Research Institute, Delft
University of Technology and the Free University of Amsterdam. We expect
you to prepare a PhD thesis, based on this research.

You have a master’s degree in a relevant field, strong skills in
qualitative or quantitative research methods and an interest in science
and technology policy. Knowledge on climate change, climate adaptation
